I’ve been on a spending spree. Not just for Christmas loot but at the grocery store. Look at all the fun new products on sale! Earth Balance Soy Free was on sale at Wally World as well as Silk’s new PureAlmond Unsweetened, so I nabbed both. Quinoa porridge, topped with a spoonful of buttery spread and some almond milk with breakfast. Yummers.
Silk refuses to let Almond Breeze sneak past them in the market, so they’ve lowered their calorie count to 35 calories per cup. I think Idaho water has at least that many calories per cup – note to self, must install water filter.
I mentioned a while ago that I’m now allergic to dairy. Sigh. This means no more Fage Greek Yogurt. No more delightful cottage cheese creations. No string cheese. No delicious whey based protein ice creams. No reason to live. I suppose inundating one’s system with whey protein for so long takes a toll. If you use a proteins supplement regularly, make sure you rotate your protein sources! This has made it very difficult for me to get enough protein. I buy free range/organic meat and eggs which are pricey and a girl can only eat so much tuna before she sweats mercury bullets into a toxic puddle on her yoga mat.
On a positive note, that means I get to branch out and explore the vegan proteins on the market, finally try coconut milk yogurt and spend a ridiculous amount of time on GoDairyFree.org
Here’s my latest fun from iHerb: protein and probiotics. (BTW, you can get $5 off your first order if you use my code HOB128). Since it’s the start of a new, fresh year, I’d like you to start this year off a little wiser. Here’s your daily lesson in consumerism: when buying probiotics online and you scout a deal (see photo above), note the servings per bottle before purchasing. Mine contained 7 capsules instead of the 90 servings in the other bottles.
Life’s Basics still rocks and now that I’m joining the ever popular dairy-free clique, LB is my BFF. It makes a great breakfast cereal mixed with almond milk, berries and a bit of quinoa or amaranth.
Pea Protein from NOW Sports was a new purchase for me. I decided to jump in headfirst to try it for the first time by putting a scoop into my seaweed soup (I can hear Smoothie Girl gagging – but January is all about detox). It’s unflavored protein, which should go well with my mermaid flavored broth, right? Yes ladies and gentlemen, it was just fine. It has the texture of flour so I can already foresee that it’s going to rock the protein baked goods in my kitchen and even mixes well into broths and soups.
But now the best part – The Giveaway! The excellent folks at NuNaturals will award multiple products to FOUR (count ‘em, 4! Wahoo!) of my readers. NuNaturals has recipes on their site and an offer for free samples that you might also want to check out. While you’re at their site printing recipes, might as well take advantage of code: BLG228, to receive a SPECIAL DISCOUNT of 15% off your TOTAL ORDER.
Each winner will receive (1) box of NuStevia Packets, 50 ct. Box, AND one (1) bottle of NuNaturals Vanilla Stevia Liquid, 2 oz. bottle.
The contest will be open to Continental U.S. residents ONLY and sorry, no P.O. Boxes.
This starts now and will be open until Monday January 31st. Instead of choosing the winners fairly at random, I’m going to select the 4 most creative responses. Make sure you leave an email address so that I can contact you if you’re a winner, otherwise your hard-earned stevia goes to someone less funny and creative than you!
Ready? It’s a multiple choice, so pick a topic or make one up. Are you sensitive to dairy or other foods? How does your body respond to sugar? Just fine or does it trigger binge behavior? Did you gain weight over the holidays? If so does the weight bother you or are you confident that it will drop off effortlessly now that the holidays are over?
Extra points for haiku or sonnet format.

In an effort to be clever and heal myself better, I was found to be allergic to wheat. i answered the call for creativity and got cooking instead of defeat. my baked goods have blossomed, my health on the rise; so much so that i've dropped a size!
ReplyDeleteI am intolerant/ sensitive to dairy but it seems as if certain dairy products aggravate it more than others. Whey I'm fine with but cottage cheese, yogurt, and ice cream tears up my stomach! I'm so sorry you can't have whey anymore..that is so sad :(
ReplyDeleteoh Life basics, its my favorite! My match made in heaven! I am lactose sensitive so I go for full fat whey dairy. Its easier on the gut.

Comments I don't leave

I love cottage cheese!!!
How's that for haiku?!?! ;)
I never used to think I was sensitive to dairy but lately I think all my cottage cheese and yogurts have been giving me a belly ache :(
I really don't eat REAL sugar but I use lots and lots of artificial sweeteners. I think I'm going to give them up but I need a good substitute.
rather than a rhyme I chose to reply in proper hitchcock horror flick style:
ReplyDeleteIt was a dark and dreary night *cue thunder* and the lovely Nikki was up in her room choosing an outfit for work. Shirt after shirt, skirt after skirt tried on and discarded with an ever growing horror... Each outfit looks more sausage-like than the last *cue shriek of terror!!!*
*scene change: small dank bathroom with concrete floor and 1 bare flickering lightbulb* Nikki stares in aprehension at the evil machine on the floor in front of her, trying to work up the courage to stand on it. Finally she slowly steps one foot, then the other on and as the digital numbers climb ever higher Nikki closes her eyes, afraid to see the truth.
Dun dun DUUUNNNNNNN!!!!
To be continued.... *cue evil laugh*
truth is I'm playing ostrich and burying my head in the sand, I refuse to weigh myself for at least 2 more weeks so I can pretend that no holiday weight gain actually occured :)
as for sugar & dairy: I rarely use actual sugar, I use stevia (sweet leaf usually) honey &/or maple syrup in everything. I have blood sugar issues, where my levels quickly rise and then crash so I try to keep my sugar intake low and fiber intake high when I do have any. My husband is lactose intolorant so no milk in our household, and no soy either because I worry about GMO soy and also what it does to my hormones with how similar it is to estrogen. My favorite is Almond Breeze Unsweetened Original, 40 calories a cup and tasty goodness too! I brought some to my friend's the other day for skinny lattes (using that, a few drops of Sweetleaf's English Toffee Stevia and espresso) and it frothes up really good with her milk frother.
There once was a girl named Deb
ReplyDeleteWho spent too much time on the web
She loves her sugah.
She loves her dairy
But it makes her mushuga
When she's not light as a fairy.
So her holiday trip
Was a massive slip
As nary a calorie
was turned away.
So now she will get back to smoothies and Hugh Jasses...
Things that she knows will work
For the masses
Even if it drives them berserk.
(Sigh)
My body hate dairy seriously. Ever seen the movie White Chick where the man eats quiche with made with cheese and has the worst diarhea ever.. That happens to me in real life its horrible experience for me and my toilet.
ReplyDeletecher_theblondeprincess@hotmail.com
I fortunately, don't have any problems with dairy.
ReplyDeleteI pretty much use Stevia for all of my sweetening needs. When I do have real sugar it does tend to trigger something in me where I just can't get enough. So I usually try to only eat those treats during special occasions (when other's are around who would stare at me strangely for noshing all the cookies!).
I didn't gain any weight over the holidays (thank goodness!), but now I'm pregnant and the weight is just gonna keep on coming! I've just been trying to keep the eats clean and keep up with my training schedule.
This isn't my own haiku, but I liked it:
Eat what you enjoy
Ride twelve thousand miles per year
You will not get fat
Thanks for doing the giveaway!
I'm not sure if my comment ever went through or not...so I'm sorry if you receive this post more than once.
ReplyDeleteBut...are you saying your body can develop an intolerance to a certain type of food if you just a little too much of it?
Also, have you noticed a difference in taste as far as brands of almond milk go? Do you have a preference over silk or almond breeze?
Well Hellooooo anonymous. Yes, your body can develop an intolerance to a food, at least a protein source if you eat waaaaaaaay too much of it. I've been consuming a high quantity of whey protein for years and suddenly my body said "no!"
ReplyDeleteI actually seem to prefer the Silk brand over Almond Breeze, but they're pretty much neck and neck. I just go by price for now.
Drinking dairy,
ReplyDeleteOh so scary!
Now with Stevia,
I'm less queasy-a!
Oh my gosh. You guys are cracking me up. Keep them coming!
ReplyDeleteMy question: What does your diet consist of?
ReplyDeleteIt consists of a variety of foods including raw, vegan, and the general foods that people eat. For raw, I like to have raw cheesecake, raw coconut butter, raw balls, and fresh fruits/veggies. As of vegan foods, I like to have vegan cupcakes, vegan cake, vegan cheesecake, and vegan oatmeal. For the general foods that people eat, I enjoy chicken caesar salads, sandwiches, chicken salad, chips, and protein bars.
I like a bit of everything!
P.S. I have a little allergy towards milk but I can tolerate cheese, yogurt, and icecream :) I usually just drink soymilk and almond milk.
Wheat is no treat
ReplyDeleteso going out to eat is no easy feat
On the contrary,
I can have dairy
but it only harmonizes
when my body when it's unpasturized
But all is well
because I think vegetables are swell.

with my body*
ReplyDeleteMoo allergies suck
ReplyDeleteSoy makes me gassy as hell
Our innards are cruel.
I have a dairy intolerance (ever seen the bathroom scene from I Hope They Serve Beer in Hell? It's a horribly raunchy movie, and that scene actually had me dry heaving....and that, my friends, is what happens to me after I eat dairy. Minus the diarrhea stained socks, because I would strip first. =P)
But I can totally digest goat products fine. I'm loving Trader Joe's creamy goat cheese these days....on pizzas, on salads, in omelettes, in stuffed chicken breasts. Finally a cheese like substance that I can handle! Where were you all my life, goat cheese?
In an exertion to be clever and aid myself improve, I was saved to be sensitised to wheat. i answered the demand for creativeness and got cooking instead of ending. my scorched artifact screw blossomed, my eudaemonia on the origination; so such so that i've dropped a situation!
